The Miscalculations of Lightning Girl by Stacy McAnulty

Regardless of where you’re going, is it stormy where you’re going for spring break? Well, my book recommendation to pass the time inside is The Miscalculations of Lightning Girl by Stacy McAnulty, which will make you reflect on how friendships can change the world. It all starts off with Lucy Callahan has to move to a normal middle school after being homeschooled her entire life, since she acquired her extreme talent for math. She is so good at math because she has acquired savant syndrome, caused by a lightning strike when she was eight years old. Her Nana says that she has to pass one more test before going to college, which is middle school. Her entire life has really been spent hanging around on a website called MathWhiz where she hangs out with who she claims are her only friends: SquareHead314, HipHypotenuse, Numberlicious, and GregS77. She also has an OCD, where she always sits up and down three times before actually sitting down in a chair. Once the school year starts, her first day of East Hamlin Middle School is rough, where people make fun of her and call her the “cleaning lady” because she always cleans surfaces before she touches them, but she also meets Windy and Levi, two of her new friends. At East Hamlin, students have to do a project every year where you have to try to do something to improve the community. When Lucy, Windy, and eventually Levi partner up, they struggle to figure out what project to do, especially when they see other groups thriving and how they have already taken action towards their projects. This is still happening until the group goes to an animal shelter and sees a woman leave a dog at the shelter because he has a large brain tumor, whose name is Cutie Pi, and he goes by Pi. This tumor is shortening his life extremely. Through this idea, Lucy’s group decides to advocate for every dog getting adopted from the shelter, no matter what attributes they have. They learn new commonalities and build their friendship, strengthening their bonds and helping each other through MathWhiz and ArtBoom, a website that Levi posts photos on. The only problem that is lurking is that Pi isn’t getting adopted, and they need to get him a home fast, because his death is right around the corner. Now, Lucy gets invited to Windy’s birthday party, a sleepover at a waterpark, except that is where Lucy gets treated like nothing and Windy is only talking with her own friends. This has a huge impact on Lucy, and this makes her feel in a state of discord and she wants to stay away from Windy. How can Lucy, Windy and Levi still be able to find Pi, Cutie Pi’s nickname, a home? And before that, will Lucy be able to restore friendship with Windy? Read The Miscalculations of Lightning Girl by Stacy McAnulty to find out.
